CFO Executive Search
Today’s CFO really has to be a broad business leader. The huge expectations of this crucial role include the ability to lead major transformation and change programmes, act as a business partner for the CEO, and demonstrate both technical and commercial expertise. The stock of the talented CFO has never been higher.
For the CFO who has managed to acquire all these skills through their career, the rewards are greater than ever. With the tough economic climate amid the ongoing uncertainty of Brexit, it is extremely difficult for executives to achieve performance related bonuses – which is putting pressure on basic salaries. As well as increasing CFO remuneration packages, boards are also having to be more open about the sector background of candidates. To attract the right CFO, many firms – particularly those based in the regions – are also agreeing to flexible working arrangements which mitigate the need for relocation.
THE CURRENT LANDSCAPE
Despite an incredibly challenging year, with huge pressure on business finances, it remains a great time to be a CFO.
The Covid-19 lockdown and continued social distancing requirements have presented companies of all sizes with an unprecedented and urgent need to review their entire business model.
Finance directors have been forced to radically revamp financial forecasts, shore up the balance sheet, implement the furlough scheme and apply for CBILS. Business transformation, digitalisation and flexible working is the order of the day.
But despite the economic carnage wreaked by the pandemic, with depressed M&A activity for example, the CFO market remains buoyant.
The lockdown has changed many mindsets at the executive level, and privately owned businesses in the regions are now finding themselves able to attract hugely talented finance directors from London-based plcs.
With less attractive LTIPs in the city making it hard to justify the increased scrutiny and pressure of plc life – and the offer of flexible working arrangements which do not demand relocation – many CFOs are now looking north for their next move.
Skills and experience in cost control, business continuity and corporate finance are needed more than ever as firms try to get to grips with the ‘new normal’.
Businesses are therefore battling in the market to attract the best finance directors and treasurers, creating huge demand for good candidates which isn’t going to change any time soon.
