CFO Executive Search
To paraphrase the old idiom, today’s CFO really has to be a Jack of all trades and master of every one. The huge expectations of this crucial role include the ability to lead major transformation and change programmes, act as a business partner for the CEO, and demonstrate both technical and commercial expertise. The stock of the talented CFO has never been higher.
For the CFO who has managed to acquire all these skills through their career, the rewards are greater than ever. With the tough economic climate amid the ongoing uncertainty of Brexit, it is extremely difficult for executives to achieve performance related bonuses – which is putting pressure on basic salaries. As well as increasing CFO remuneration packages, boards are also having to be more open about the sector background of candidates. To attract the right CFO, many firms – particularly those based in the regions – are also agreeing to flexible working arrangements which mitigate the need for relocation.
THE CURRENT LANDSCAPE
Key current concerns of CFOs are unsurprisingly dominated by Brexit. Deloitte’s recent Survey of CFOs, which 112 CFOs of FTSE 350 and other large private companies took part in, found 73 per cent of CFOs thought the overall business environment would be worse following withdrawal from the EU; 38 per cent said there was a high or very high level of uncertainty facing their business.
But while more than half said reducing costs was a strong priority over the next 12 months, the priority attached to expansion through acquisitions or new products/services is at its highest since 2009, and major capital investment in digital transformation and ecommerce continues across all sectors. Achieving growth in an environment of stringent cost control is the magic formula for 2019.
For private equity CFOs, next-generation technology development and cyber security is another key focus according to the findings of the Ernst & Young LLP – EY 2018 Global Private Equity CFO survey of 110 private equity CFOs.
